Killer Apps for Cool Cats

I recently came across a news article announcing that Friskies will be coming out with tablet-optimized gaming applications designed specifically for cats to play on the iPad and Android. Exciting titles from Friskies will include Cat Fishing, Tasty Treasures Hunt, and Party Mix-Up. If there are new apps for cats, then it got me thinking about what other new applications are being touted for consumers in their leisure time… and would I consider downloading those applications?
Who doesn’t like to relax on the couch for a bit while watching TV on the weekends? I know I do. Cable companies offer some great applications for tablets. For example, you forgot to schedule your DVR to record the Cubs game or a funny sitcom, like 30 Rock? No problem! DIRECTV offers you the convenience of scheduling your recordings remotely. Xfinity offers that same service of programming your DVR from anywhere – and it also allows your tablet to function as a TV remote. Xfinity also now allows you to watch On Demand movies and shows on the tablet. Dish Network’s TV Everywhere allows consumers to watch all channels and everything on your DVR, wherever you go with your computer, tablet, or phone.
Perhaps you do not have any of the above cable providers, but you subscribe to HBO. Then you can get the free HBO GO app. What is HBO GO? This app allows you to watch all of HBO’s programming – from original series, comedy specials, hit movies, and even sports. The app works great in that you can watch an old series, like Band of Brothers, or catch a missed episode from last season, such as Boardwalk Empire. It’s available on iPad, iPhone, and Android – plus you can watch from your computer. And best of all, it is free for HBO subscribers.
If you are like most people I know, you like to travel. If you are an AAA member like me, you can download AAA TourBook Guides for different devices, such as a Kindle or an iPad, for your next travel adventure. Some of the current TourBook Guides available from AAA are Las Vegas, Orlando, Honolulu, and San Diego. AAA will also release additional downloadable guidebooks for other cities, such as Dallas, San Antonio, and New York, later in the year.
Will I be buying the applications for cats anytime soon? Not so much since I am a dog owner and a dog type of guy. Not to mention I do not think I would want a cat (or any pet for that matter) to destroy the touch screen of a tablet that can retail for as much as $700. However, I think the applications explored above offer a great benefit for consumers and are definitely more interesting than a gaming app designed for cats. Best of all, all of the applications listed above are free if you are subscriber!
