Remote deposit! (again)

Despite my reliance on my phone, and all the recent fanfare about mobile banking, I’ve been hard pressed to find a good reason to use it personally. Obviously due to my profession, I have a vested interest in trying out the new apps, but aside from that I don’t feel a need to bank from my phone.

That all changed on the last day of 2010.

After Christmas I was in the fortunate position of being in possession of several checks from generous relatives. If you’ve read my blog posts for a while you know how I feel about depositing checks. In short, checks will sit on my desk for weeks – sometimes months – until I get around to depositing them.

By December 31 the checks had already been sitting for a week. I had no excuse for not making a deposit. I wasn’t working, the kids were off from school, my husband took the week off for the most part, and none of us had any plans.

But still, I couldn’t manage to get to the bank.

That morning my bank emailed me. (I think they really ARE trying to improve our relationship.) I didn’t read the email in its entirety, so I really have no idea what it said. But I did notice something about signing up for mobile banking. Eureka!! Forty-five seconds later I had the app, and shortly after that I was photographing my checks to make my first deposit with my phone.

I told my neighbor about it too. She has the new iPhone and a small business, so she always has lots of checks. She couldn’t wait to look into it herself because she too has trouble depositing checks in a timely fashion. She’s my neighbor that is a professional organizer, so if she has trouble depositing checks, I feel it must be a common affliction. A home check scanner might better suit her needs, but regardless she’s going to look into her options.

Who needs a branch? I don’t.
